You've Got Mail
Before you start rushing into the new year trying to make every dream come true in January itself, give a moment of your life to me. I promise I won't waste it.
As a kid, I used to sit in my balcony staring at the sky imaging the earth in the space rotating on its axis on a new years eve. I imagined bright lights shining, fireworks cracking and loud cheer of people one after another in all the different countries as the earth rotates.
I always saw new years as a day when the whole world comes together, for once finding a little happiness, a little solace in their pain. A day when people hopes for a better year, A day to dream, A day to bury unwanted things behind. It felt special.
I saw many people celebrating it in the warmth of their family and friends, many parting away their worries, some spending it working their ass off, many boycotting it all together while many longing for that perfect midnight kiss.
Though in all of these there is one special person that we forget- Ourselves. You might buy a nice gift for your physical self but what about your emotional self? The part of you which was awake with you in the long nights, the part of you that answered the knocks of rain on your window, the part of you which went through all the hardships of the year keeping a smile on their face. What did you do for it? Nothing?
Here's a secret, our heart is a big fool. It's a fool who gets happy at the tiniest of things. So, this year try gifting it something as well. Write a letter to yourself.
I feel I was convincing enough though if you need more reasons than-
Health:
Writing a letter to yourself helps you say out loud all the thoughts that you are running away from throughout the day. You can make clear sense out of them, reducing over thinking and what ifs'. It can help in mental well being. Write a letter to your past self or future self or a friend, expressing all that comes to your head. Writing in this way by directing to someone will make your mind conscious and say all that needs to be said. Don't worry about sending it, just visit it after a couple of days and you might find a better perspective.
Don't know how to start and feel shy to stare at an empty page, then here's what you can write:
- Appreciate from what you've been through this year,
- Apologies for the goof-ups you made,
- cheer for the upcoming year as you'll be someone who has had more experience than the one who was celebrating last year.
- Crush over all the things you loved. All the bands that gave you a great background music, all the books that took you to wonderful adventures and all the girls and guys that made your heart flutter.
- Or whatever you want after all it's for your own self.
If you don't know where to write then here are some options:
- write on a good paper with your favourite coloured pen. You can even post it if you are a romantic like me.
- write it in a diary.
- write it online. Futureme.org is good for this if you want to send it to your future self.
- tweet it.
- make it a story on insta or wattpad.
- take a leaf and write on it, maybe like a poem? Be as creative as you want. Be yourself.
Now, I've provided you with enough reasons, prompts and ways to write. So, pick up your lazy ass and be good to yourself. Happy new year.
